Theshold Studios NY James Walsh

In 1996, Audimodal Design collaborated with founding partners Anthony “A.J.” Maltese and James Walsh to transform an unfinished rehearsal space in Manhattan’s Midtown West neighborhood, Hell’s Kitchen, into a recording studio for their band. The project took an unexpected turn in 1997 when an adjacent space became available following the passing of their friend, singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley. What began as a modest renovation evolved into a state-of-the-art music recording and audio production studio.
Working under the name Threshold Music, A.J. and James—along with Steve Koontz of Audimodal Design—developed the now-iconic control room, originally Jeff Buckley’s dedicated rehearsal space in New York. Over time, the studio expanded to include multiple recording spaces, office suites, writing rooms, and rehearsal rooms. Threshold Recording Studios became a sought-after location for voice-over work, podcasts, filming, photoshoots, interviews, audition tapes, and video production.
Following the passing of co-founder A.J. Maltese in 2014, James Walsh became the sole owner and operator of Threshold Studios. In September 2021, the main studio was destroyed by flooding from Hurricane Ida, marking a significant turning point for the studio’s future.
Threshold Recording Studios NYC is now up and running at a new location on West 45th Street. Audimodal Design is currently working on studio updates and planning the construction of new Dolby ATMOS music mixing and recording rooms. Stay tuned for more developments.
